Here it is, my top tips for traveling with kids. I don’t claim to be an expert in much, but this… this, I might actually know a thing or two about.

TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH KIDS

  • Snacks- this one doesn’t need a lot of explaining other than I will say this- take more than you think you’ll need. I mean, can you ever have TOO MANY snacks? No. It’s rhetorical, but in case there was any doubt, the answer is no.
  • Keep them occupied- when flying, or driving in the car for long periods, you’ll want to have something to keep them occupied. I made some little coloring boxes before we went to Ireland and they were a huge hit. Picture books and even tablets are great, too…especially for long international flights.

  • Extra time- if you’ve ever gotten a kid ready for school in the morning, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about…

  • Don’t overbook your days! I know you want to fit as much in as possible and I get it. But sometimes in an effort to see and do ALL THE THINGS, we don’t give ourselves or our kids enough time to take it all in and enjoy all that we’re seeing and doing. Don’t forget, all these new adventures are super stimulating for kids… they need a little down time, too.

  • Free stuff-  most cities and towns you visit will have their own websites. Look them up before you go and you will usually be able to find a ton of free activities going on while you’re there. Also, go outdoors! Taking the scenic route and exploring the scenery and landscape around you costs next to nothing… just a little gas in your car.

  • Get them involved + don’t only do “kid friendly stuff- I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million more times… travel is not always leisure. Or at least it shouldn’t be, in my opinion. Guys, I am seriously so passionate about this. I think it’s such a privilege to be able to travel and meet new people, witness other cultures and learn about different ways of living. More importantly though, I want my kids to care about this stuff!
  • If you’re going somewhere that they speak another language, start learning a few new words and phrases with your kids before you go. Learn about new customs and traditions and talk to your kids about them before during and after your trip!
  • Learn about the unique history of the place you’re visiting. Take them to museums and historical monuments! I think a lot of times as parents we just assume our kids are too young or that they won’t be interested. But I promise you, if you are interested and are actively engaging with your child and helping them learn alongside you, they will be interested, too!

  • Be flexible- probably a tip for life in general, but especially when traveling… things never seem to go as planned. We’ve survived everything from projectile vomiting in the rental car, tibial fractures and Mexican hospitals trying to charge us $2000 for 3 stitches, all with our kids in tow. Roll with the punches and just think of all the great stories you’ll have to tell!

There you have it, my top tips for traveling with kids. I hope it helps! Is there anything you’d add to the list? Let me know!
